Costa Mesa Historical Society Speakers Program presents Dick Metz. Dick, a native of Laguna Beach, has a fascinating life story. Born in 1929, he played alongside Shirley Temple on the beaches of Newport and learned to surf before it was popular using a 100-pound wooden surfboard he crafted himself. His global travels served as an inspiration for the creators of ‘The Endless Summer’. Dick’s contributions to the world of surfing extend beyond his personal adventures. He co-founded Hobie Sports and the Surfing Heritage Museum. In recognition of his pioneering efforts, he was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 2023.
