Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are independent living facilities located on the same parcel as the primary unit, which may be occupied by extended family members or tenants. New state and City regulations streamline the development of these units in all residential districts.

The City's ADU Ordinance meets the minimum state requirements while maintaining the City's existing urban fabric. The provisions that are unique to Costa Mesa are the allowable minimum size of 150 square feet, optional parking, and the objective design standards such as the second floor / two-story setbacks.
