DROP-IN SWIM PROGRAMS

Fall Session: August 18th –November 30th

Facility closed: November 11th, November 28th-29th 

NON-RESIDENTS: $5.00 non-resident fee will be added to each multi-day pass purchased.

Membership passes are required for entry and may be purchased online here or at the Downtown Aquatic Center prior to entering the water for your swim. Memberships can be purchased daily or in packages of 10, 20, or 30 and never expire.

Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy

The City reserves the right to cancel drop-in lap swim programming in the case of inclement weather, such as thunder, lighting, high wind, or other unsafe weather conditions.

The City reserves the right to issue refunds and/or pass credit on a case-by-case basis.

ADULT LAP SWIM

Adult lap swim at the Downtown Aquatic Center is a drop-in program. Swimmers can drop in and swim anytime during lap swim hours. The Downtown Aquatic Center has a 4 lane, 25 yard pool and the water temperature is around 82 degrees. 

AGES: 16+

Punch passes or payment required prior to admittance into the pool. Visitors/observers are not allowed entrance into the pool facility during drop-in programs.

Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy

The City reserves the right to cancel one class in the event of inclement weather, such as thunder or lightning, with no prorated refund. If possible, a make-up class will be provided on the last Friday of the session. Subsequent cancellations will result in a prorated refund for each additional instance of class time missed as a result of inclement weather. Cancellations that occur in the latter half of a class meeting will not be considered for a refund or make-up class.

 

YOUTH GROUP LESSONS

Come make a splash during our swim lessons! Weekday swim lessons will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays for four (4) weeks each session, for a total of eight (8) classes per session. P&C - Level 3 classes meet for 25 minutes. Level 4 and Level 5/6 classes meet for 40 minutes.

Small Group Swim Lessons meet on Saturdays for four (4) class sessions, and have reduced class sizes to provide more individualized attention per student. All levels meet for 25 minutes.

ADULT GROUP LESSONS

Are you an adult who has always wanted to learn how to swim or do you want to improve your existing swimming abilities? Our adult swim lessons are tailored to fit your needs, whether you’re a complete beginner or just looking to refine your technique. Experienced and certified Instructor Lifeguards provide a supportive and comfortable environment for you to build confidence and proficiency in the water. Weekday lessons meet for 40-minutes, twice-per week, for a total of eight (8) class meetings.

Small Group Adult Swim Lessons are offered on Saturdays, for a total of four (4), 25-minute class meetings. This class offers reduced class sizes to combine the camaraderie of group learning with the benefits of personalized instruction to meet participants’ individualized goals.

AGES: 16+

FEE: $53.00 for Costa Mesa residents. $58.00 for non-residents.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

SCHEDULED BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Private swim lessons are ideal for those who wish to have extra practice on specific techniques or who would benefit from one-on-one attention. Private lessons are offered during regular group lesson times, subject to instructor availability.

FEE: $125 for four (4), 25-minute class sessions

ADULT SHALLOW AQUA AEROBICS

Dive into a refreshing fitness experience with our Aqua Aerobics classes! This low-impact, high-energy workout takes place in shallow water, making it suitable for participants of all fitness levels. These 40-minute classes are designed to provide full-body workouts to help you build strength, improve cardiovascular health, and increase flexibility all while avoiding strain on the joints and bones.

SWIM INSTRUCTOR AID

AGES: 12-17 years old

Have you taken swim lessons for a while and are ready for a new challenge? Do you want to learn basic leadership skills and pass on what you have learned to younger swimmers? The Swim Instructor Aid program allows advanced youth swimmers to assist the DAC’s Instructor Guards with teaching swim lessons to beginning level swimmers. We also offer community services hours for all schools. All SIA candidates must submit an application to the Downtown Aquatic Center at 1860 Anaheim Ave., or email application to cmrecinfo@costamesaca.gov.

SWIM LESSON LEVEL INFORMATION

Parent & Child (P&C)

AGES | 6 MONTHS – 3 YEARS

CLASSES | 25 MINUTES (12:1)

Parent and child share the fun of learning to swim.  You will assist your child with basic water adjustment, breath control, and swimming readiness. Parent participation in the water required; one parent/adult per child.

Pre-School Aquatics (PSA)

AGES | 4 - 5 YEARS

CLASSES | 25 MINUTES (5:1)

Students learn basic water adjustment, breath control, floating, and arm and leg movement.

 

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills 

AGES | 6 - 15 YEARS

CLASSES | 25 MINUTES (6:1)

Students learn basic water adjustment, safety, floating, kicking, breath control, treading water, and arm/leg movement for front crawl and backstroke.   

 

Level 2 - Fundamental Skills 

AGES | 6 - 15 YEARS

CLASSES | 25 MINUTES (6:1)

Students learn the fundamentals of front crawl, backstroke, treading water, floating, and water safety.  

Minimum Requirements: Participants must be able to glide on their front and back for 2 body lengths; swim with arm and leg motion for 5 yards on their front and back; and float on their back for at least 10 seconds.

 

Level 3 - Stroke Development 

AGES | 6 - 15 YEARS

CLASSES | 25 MINUTES (8:1)

Students learn freestyle with side breathing; backstroke and elementary backstroke; dolphin, scissor, and breaststroke kicks; treading water; and front dives.  Concentration is placed on water safety, refinement of freestyle, building strength and endurance.  

Minimum Requirements: Participants must be able to swim 15 yards freestyle and backstroke; float on their back for at least 30 seconds; and tread water for 15 seconds.

 

Level 4 - Stroke Improvement 

AGES | 6 - 15 YEARS

CLASSES | 40 MINUTES (9:1)

Students learn butterfly, sidestroke, and breaststroke arms; prolonged water treading; and basic wall turns.  Emphasis is placed on water safety, refinement of skills learned in previous levels, and endurance. 

Minimum Requirements: Participants must be able to swim 25 yards of elementary backstroke, backstroke, and freestyle with side breathing; 15 yards of breaststroke kick, dolphin kick, scissors kick; tread water for 1 minute; and float on their back for 1 minute.

 

Level 5/6 - Stroke Refinement & Fitness Swimmer 

AGES | 6 - 15 YEARS

CLASSES | 40 MINUTES (9:1)

Students continue working to refine strokes from previous levels and are introduced to flip turns, swim drills, and use of a pace clock and other training equipment.  Level 6 students work to improve their skills for competitive swimming. 

Minimum Requirements: Participants must be able to swim 50 yards of elementary backstroke, backstroke, and freestyle with side breathing; swim 25 yards of breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke; perform front and back open turns; and tread water for 2 minutes.
