The Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD) historically reported monthly Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) statistical data to the California Department of Justice (DOJ), who in turn reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). UCR statistics were the aggregated data of index "Part I" crimes consisting of homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. All other crime statistics were categorized as "Part II" crimes.

The UCR program has since transitioned to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which captures more details and offenses within each crime incident and offers a higher quality of collected data by expanding the classification of crimes for better tracking and analysis. Each offense occurring within an incident is counted, rather than just the most serious offense. NIBRS statistics are categorized into person offenses, property offenses and society offenses. Where UCR tracked eight Part I crime categories, NIBRS tracks over 20.

To comply with the DOJ requirements, the Costa Mesa Police Department began the transition from UCR to NIBRS in late 2023. The monthly statistics provided here will now reflect what the Department reports to the DOJ and FBI. Please be advised that statistics for 2024 will be published once the NIBRS transition has been completed.
