Multi-Family Residents:

State law now requires many multi-family properties—including those in Costa Mesa—to begin source-separating their recyclables in order to keep them out of the landfill. The City has used State grant funding to purchase small indoor recycling containers to help multi-family residents source-separate their recyclables. Supplies are limited and will be distributed through your hauler on a first-come, first-served basis.

Paper, cardboard, and various types of beverage containers (aluminum, plastic and glass) should be kept separate from trash and placed in the outdoor recycling container provided by your hauler.

Beverage containers offer a unique incentive to recycle due to the California Redemption Value (CRV) you pay when purchasing beverages from a store. These CRV funds are then paid out when you redeem these containers at a recycling center (like the Orange Coast College Recycling Center).

Wondering what qualifies? Look at the label on your container for the universal recycle symbol and the words CA CASH REFUND or CA CRV. Containers with these markings can be placed in your recycling bin or taken to a local recycling center for a cash refund.

In addition to sorting traditional recyclables, all residents are required by SB 1383 to properly sort and dispose of organic waste. Multi-family properties discarding less than 20 gallons of organic waste per week may be granted a waiver exempting them from this requirement. Learn more about organic waste recycling.
